Gay Water, a canned vodka soda company, announced the launch of its Gay Water, introducing one of the first alcohol beverage brands to be founded and grounded in the Queer community.

The company is on a mission to reclaim the word “gay” by making it evident every day and for everyone — at local bars, restaurants, liquor stores, grocery stores, and in peoples' homes, it adds.

"There has been a separate lack of Gay representation in the alcohol industry, but Gay Water aims to change this," Hoddeson, founder and CEO of Homosexual Water, said in a statement.  “As a company, we are focused on creating positive alter in the industry through our function with vendors and employees that contribute our values. We want to generate a brand that sparks joy every time you observe and taste it."

When I came out as bi a decade ago, I anticipated encountering certain cliches upon stepping foot into my first lgbtq+ bar: the ever-present top 40 remixes of pop divas, twinks with platinum blond hair donning mesh tank tops, and an abundance of drag queens whom I should be ready to generously tip. But one unexpected phenomenon stood out: the chokehold that Vodka Sodas had over queer men. It seemed that whenever I approached the exclude, I’d hear nearly all The Gays™ ordering Vodka Sodas, regardless of their appearance.

The “masc” dom leather daddies were ordering them alongside the girlies. Bears, otters, and jocks were throwing support the nearly odorless elixir, especially the last of which with their impossibly ripped bodies. So naturally, my gay besties were obsessed. Eventually, they would casually announce, “I’m going to snatch a Vodka Soda. Do you want anything?” Despite thinking that Vodka Sodas tasted nasty, watered down, and bland, I’d answer with a reluctant, “Sure, snatch me one, too.” I preferred craft cocktails bursting with flavor and complexity, so by comparison, Vodka Sodas tasted dull and lifeless.

Gay Water

For many years, the term 'gay water' has been known within the queer community as a colloquialism for a vodka soda. The brand Same-sex attracted Water officially launches to bring that phrase to the mainstream as one of the first alcoholic beverages founded and grounded in the LGBTQ+ community.

Gay Water is more than a beverage company, it is a brand that will represent the LGBTQ+ community 365 days a year. At its earliest definition, "gay" means "happy," yet over the years understanding of the pos shifted to negative as people began using it as a pejorative label for people and actions. The organization is on a mission to reclaim the word by making it seeable every day and for everyone - at local bars, restaurants, liquor stores, grocery stores, and in peoples' homes.

The company is the brainchild of Spencer Hoddeson, queer influencer and previous leader of corporate social for Yahoo.

With three simple ingredients, only 80 calories and 4% ABV, gluten-free and no sugar, Gay Water also aims to appeal to folks trying to make healthier lifestyle choices, but still want to enjoy alcohol. Male lover Water will launch with four refreshing flavors: watermelon, lime, peach, and grapefruit with plans to

As Major Brands Waver, Queer Water Aims for Authenticity

Growing up, Spencer Hoddeson said he mostly heard the term “gay” in a negative context. Now, he wants to destigmatize the word and create inclusion in spaces that traditionally don’t have LGBTQ-owned products, one Gay Water at a time.

The ready-to-drink vodka soda debuts at an auspicious time, coming on the heels of anti-trans legislation across the land, as well as a boycott of A-B’s Bud Light brand led by right wing influencers and political figureheads following a one-off influencer promotion with a transgender woman in early April.

As other major companies also reevaluate or retrench their LGBTQ+ inclusivity efforts— particularly regarding trans person people—many BevAlc companies carry on to align, although perhaps more carefully, with Gay events or campaigns, including major vodka brands during last month’s Pride activities.

Now Gay Water – named for a popular cocktail in queer bars – joins Supergay Spirits in the small cohort of spirit brands founded by an LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs that are proudly sharing their identity on the label. The two brands claim to differ from major companies that engage in “rain
