You can’t consider Hollyoaks without thinking Diverse. Synonymous with years of representation, groundbreaking storylines and character journeys, as successfully as iconic ships that have had audiences over several generations in a tizzy, the Channel 4 soap is an ally and then some.

Now approaching its 30th anniversary, Hollyoaks boasts a history of fantastic gay, sapphic, bisexual, trans and genderqueer characters, all who acquire been at the centre of storylines both focusing on their gender identity and sexual orientation but, just as crucially, not.

As show stalwart Kieron Richardson said when we sat down for a chat on set recently, the characters ‘just are – they can be conduct characters at the forefront of the show.

‘It’s not like, “We’re going to have a gay one, we’re going to own a lesbian in it or a trans person,” they were just steer characters. They had stories and their sexuality was just a part of them, it was never that this was a focal point of why they were in the show. I think we always led the way with that.’

Hollyoaks star Ross Adams reveals importance of LGBTQ+ characters who aren’t defined by sexuality

Hollyoaks mainstayScott Drinkwell (Ross Adams) is undoubtedly one of the greatest LGBTQ+ characters the soap genre has ever seen.

Over the years, he’s featured in some incredibly important storylines, and lately he’s been instrumental in helping Mitchell Deveraux (Imran Adams) appear to terms with his own sexuality.

To celebrate Metro.co.uk Pride Week, we spoke to performer Ross about the importance of Gay representation in soap.

How important is it for soaps to have representation of LGBTQ+ characters?

I believe it’s HUGELY vital. I often consider of our younger viewers who may be sitting at home watching the show feeling perplexed or ashamed about who they are.

It can be really frightening to think that you’re somehow ‘different’ so seeing LGBTQ+ characters represented on screen might be one of the only ways that juvenile LGBTQ+ people can gain a positive insight – one which shows them that other people not only remain, but thrive, just by being themselves.

Oh, I have to confess. I haven’t survey it in years. I kept up with it, because I simply had to know if they were ever going to employ James again and return him to the man we all know and love. But all of his storylines after Harry’s death were just bull. So Out of Character, badly written etc. And well…now he’s dead.
So, I have no plan what is even happening anymore.
I execute think the exhibit is on its last legs and ending soon.
I know they own lucas and dillon, but it never caught my attention.
And Ste and John Paul are still there, but alas, don’t care much about them anymore either.
I consider whatever HO is creating it’s not really going to fly high. It certainly isn’t even making a ripple on the gayest social media platfrom there is.
The show and their dedication to killing off characters and destroying widespread pairings pretty much guarentees that people won’t want to get invested in anything new.
Which is again, why I don’t deliver the show many years before it is given the axe.

Ok, because of the celebration of Hollyoaks 20 years I consider I will have a tiny Hollyoaks special here on the blog. That could be a sequel, because there's just so much to tell! Hollyoaks has dealed with a lot of LGBT related issues through the years with two gay rapes, at least two transsexuals, a poly relationship, crossdressing more than once and lot's and lot's more. But let's just focus on the gay regular characters for a while.

It all started with John Paul McQueen in 2006. He fell in love with his best ally Craig Dean who he had a secret relatiosnhip with and both dated a DJ and a priest before he left the show in 2008. Express gratitude gods he returned in 2012, after James Sutton made a litte voyage in Emmerdale as a straight character, who actually worked with Aaron Livesy. The world is quite small indeed. Then he slept with Ste's great big love, Brendan Brady, dated Ste's ex Doug for a short while, had a secret relationship with Ste's dad, Danny Lomax, before he ended up with Ste Hay himself! And they broke up and he also had an affair with his cousin's husband, Lockie. A lot has happened to John Paul McQueen! And I love h
