White Tower Musings
I’ve written this before, but when I was young I was not much of a reader. I aspired to scan, and I liked “the idea” of reading, but the actual practice left me too dissatisfied. I mean I had Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros to defeat and they weren’t going to compete themselves after all. The Picture of Dorian Grey could delay and so many of the books on my shelf sat and poised dust, apart of course for my Calvin and Hobbes books, and, of course, my Captain Underpants collection. I’d bought, my parents bought let’s be honest here, the first book at the school publication fair because the man on the cover was wearing nothing but underwear, and when I opened the pages and saw the book had pictures and a comic book inside I insisted that I buy, that my parents buy me the book. Had it not been for Captain Underpants I might not have sustained any real desire to read in which case I could have focused on science and eventually cured canc…okay I couldn’t even end that sentence, but you arrive at the general idea.
Much like Family Guy and Calvin and Hobbes, I gravitated to Captain Underpants because it was silly. The humor matched a lot of what I considered to
UPDATED: Michigan Superintendent Notifies Parents of Queer Character in Captain Underpants Book
A several weeks after the Parent-Teacher Organization at an elementary university in Monroe, Michigan banned the latest Captain Underpants manual from a educational facility book fair because it reveals that one of the main characters is gay, a academy district on the other side of the state is taking a diverse tack. Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot will be available at next week’s book fairs in Rockford Common Schools, but the superintendent sent a letter to all elementary parents notifying them of “material that may not align with the values of many families.”
Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants series is published by Scholastic, which runs a robust book reasonable program allowing students and their parents to buy books at a discount with part of the proceeds going to the academy. After receiving inquiries from the district about the superintendent’s letter, the publisher issued a remark regarding the book:
Children all across the country live in families with varied family structures and our authors are moved to portray these families in their books. While the auth

Scholastic Inc.Fans of the Captain Underpants children's guide series are in for a surprise with one of their favorite characters.
In the twelfth manual of the series officially titled Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot, George and Harold meet their future selves.
And as author and illustrator Dav Pilkey quietly reveals, Harold is a gay character.
"Soon, everyone had gathered together in Aged George's studio," the passage scan. "Old George, his wife, and their kids, Meena and Nik, sat on the couch, while Old Harold, his husband, and their twins, Owen and Kei, plopped down in the gigantic giant beanbag chair."
The passage concluded, "'We're your dads when they were kids,' said Harold."
While some are applauding Pilkey's subtle but significant words, others are fast to question if it's right for their kids.
It's a situation the famous author has encountered before. Back in 2013, Pilkey's work appeared on the American Library Association's (ALA) 2013 Superior Ten List of
