The third 'Fantastic Beasts' movie finally addresses Dumbledore's sexuality front and center — nearly 15 years after J.K. Rowling first revealed he's gay

In 2007, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling made a remark that would echo in the franchise's fandom for years to show up. Speaking at Carnegie Hall that year, she said that she had "always thought of Dumbledore as gay" — and that the relationship between him and his teenage friend Gellert Grindelwald had been romantic.

Since then, Dumbledore's sexuality has only explicitly existed outside of any of the franchise's main properties, and Rowling's words had never been confirmed on screen. She hinted in 2016 that the character's queerness would play a role in the "Fantastic Beasts" films, telling reporters to "watch this space," Occasion Magazine reported at the time.

Almost fifteen years after Rowling first confirmed Dumbledore's sexuality, it's finally made it to the big screen.

Rowling Lets Dumbledore Out of the Closet

Oct. 20, 2007 — -- Well, it's official. Albus Dumbledore, a hero of the phenomenally popular Harry Potter series and headmaster of the wizarding college Hogwarts, is gay.

That's right, Harry's mentor and father-figure would favor a nice wizard to a hot witch any day.

In a surprising new Potter twist, author J.K. Rowling outed Dumbledore at New York's Carnegie Hall in front of 2,000 Potter fans during a question and answer session Friday night.

After reading an excerpt from the seventh installment of her series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," one young fan asked if Dumbledore had ever loved anyone.

"Dumbledore is gay, actually," replied Rowling.

She was initially met with a surprised silence but ultimately the audience erupted in cheers for several minutes prompting Rowling to add, "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy."

Rowling went on to explain that Dumbledore fell for Gellert Grindelwald, his childhood partner with similarly brilliant wizarding skills, who eventually went over to the dark side and became the predecessor to the i

Timeline of JK Rowling’s Interviews about Dumbledore/Grindelwald

Reveal happened October 2007 during Deathly Hallows Book tour which was released on July, 2007. So she didn’t reveal “YEARS LATER” to skip on some queer moment. Just recognize your facts before you criticize first.

This is all I could find. If there is more interviews she did about this topic, consent me know.

Did Dumbledore, who believed in the prevailing power of cherish, ever fall in love himself?

My genuine answer to you… I always mind of Dumbledore as gay. [ovation.] … Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a brief more because falling in love can blind us to an extent? But, he met someone as brilliant as he was, and rather like Bellatrix he was very drawn to this brilliant person, and horribly, terribly allow down by him. Yeah, that’s how i always saw Dumbledore. In truth, recently I was in a script read through for the sixth production, and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying I knew a lady once, whose hair… [laughter]. I

J.K. Rowling Wants You To Know How Gay Dumbledore Really Was

Even though the Harry Potter books came to a close when the seventh entry in the series was published in 2007, that hasn't stopped author J.K. Rowling from adding to the larger lore of her wizarding world. With an Olivier and Tony-winning participate that will probably dwell on the West Finish and Broadway for all eternity, and the Fantastic Beasts franchise chugging right along, Rowling has figured out how to mine her fantastical brain for content better than any blogger ever could. (How does she do it? I am so tired.)

But despite being a genius at world-building, Rowling is notorious for retroactively adding details to her published stories, causing controversy both within the Harry Potter fanbase and the outside world of casual fans. The most notorious example, of course, would be the sexuality of Albus Dumbledore. In a 2007 interview, Rowling claimed that the head of Hogwarts, who serves as a mentor to the titular character and tragically perishes in the penultimate novel, was deeply in love with the shadowy wizard Gallert Grindelwald.

"Dumbledore is gay," Rowling said in response to a fan who
