Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye, born Marvin Pentz Homosexual Jr. (1939 – 1984) was an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He helped to shape the sound of Motown in the 1960s, first as an in-house session player and later as a solo artist with a string of hits, including “Ain’t That Peculiar”, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”, and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”, and duet recordings with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Diana Ross, and Tammi Terrell. He earned the titles “Prince of Motown” and “Prince of Soul”.
In 1956, at 17 Gaye dropped out of high university and enlisted in the Air Oblige. According to his superiors, Gaye was uncooperative and lackadaisical. A military chaplain stated that he “has no future value to the Air Force.” When disciplinary efforts failed, Gaye (who later added an “e” to his surname) faked mental illness. He was given a General Discharge in 1957.

Born Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. on April 2, 1939 in Washington, D.C., the son of a Pentecostal preacher, singer Marvin Gaye would move on to develop one of Motown Records’ most famous artists. Joining his first musical group in high school, the DC Tones, he dropped out of school when he was 17 to escape his father’s abuse. The troubled relationship with his father would persist the rest of his life.
Following a one-year stint in the U.S. Atmosphere Force, he returned to D.C. to join the Marquees, signing a shrink with Columbia. The Marquees morphed into Harvey and the Moonglows, led by Harvey Fuqua who would be instrumental in advancing Gaye’s career. It was through Fuqua, who had started active for Anna Records, owned by Gwen and Anna Gordy, that Gaye met their brother Berry Gordy, Jr.
Working first as a drummer and backup singer, Gaye began recording with Motown Records in 1961. As a person, Gaye preferred crooning and singing standards like those of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. Academy Award-nominated actor Terrence Howard revealed he turned down a Lee Daniels-helmed biopic about legendary Motown musician Marvin Gaye because it would require him to examine the Prince of Soul’s rumored homosexuality.
Speaking with Bill Maher on his Club Random podcast, the Empire star recalled “the biggest mistake I made in my career,” which was rejecting Smokey Robinson’s offer to play him in a biopic after the King of Motown invited him out to dinner. At the period, he said, he was in the middle of talks for the Gaye biopic and “was existence faithful to Lee Daniels because I had given him my word as man.”
Howard said the news “broke [Robinson’s] heart,” while host Maher remarked that the exploration of Gaye’s life would have been “much more interesting” because “there’s a lot more drama,” given the What’s Going On artist’s killing by his father.
