It may sound like a spin-off of Nia Vardalos’s ridiculously successful 2002 My Big Obese Greek Wedding but this Italian movie was inspired by a small, off-Broadway play that premiered in New York City in 2003. It was skillfully received, particularly within the gay society, and it inspired writer Anthony J. Wilkinson to stylus two sequels – My Big Homosexual Italian Funeral and My Big Queer Italian Midlife Crisis.
Brought to the screen by writer-director Alessandro Genovesi, My Great Gay Italian Wedding is intended to be a adorable , simple, light-hearted farce. It begins on a romantic letter though. Antonio (Caccamo) pulls out a silver ring from his pocket, a surprised Paolo (Esposito) is quick to say yes, and the wedding preparations can now begin.
Every character in the film has self-generated problems and instead of going for the obvious remedy, they follow amorous comedy clichés and make life as difficult as p
Lehmkuhl played his final act July 24.
The cast also features Anthony J. Wilkinson, Bryan Anthony, Tricia Burns, Brett Douglas, Liz Gerecitano, Leah Gerstel, Randi Kaplan, Chad Kessler, Kevin McIntyre, Carla-Marie Mercun, Erik Ransom, Meagan Robar, Joe Scanio, Fabio Taliercio and Adam Zelasko. Teresa A. Cicala directs.
My Big Gay Italian Wedding is described as such: "Planning a wedding can be hell… or a hell of a lot of fun! Two handsome grooms, one overbearing Italian mother, a jealous ex-boyfriend, the wedding planner from Hell, and an assortment of kooky family and friends all gather together for Off-Broadway's newest laugh-out-loud comedy with a heart."
The production also features choreography by J. Austin Eyer, scenic design by Plunder Santeramo, costume design by Philip Heckman and lighting design by Graham Kindred.
Daniel Robinson has been seen on Broadway in Hairspray as well as in the tours of Oklahoma! and Happy Days: The Musical.
