Gay Sands Beach along Lake Superior on the Keweenaw peninsula is beautiful, but looks can be deceiving. This “sand” is actually a superfund site containing copper mixed with arsenic, silver and nickel from decades of dumping mining waste. For more than a century 50 billion pounds of crushed ore had been deposited along the shore. It had once stretched a half mile into the lake. Now these metal-rich sands are starting to erode to the south which endangers the Buffalo Reef. This reef is where whitefish and lake trout spawn. Link us as we operate along the area experiencing the extent of this disaster hidden in the pristine-looking Lake Superior shoreline.

This week Michigan Radio is airing a series called Community Vibe. We’re showcasing one interesting thing about different towns across the declare.
Today we’ll visit the neighboring communities of Saugatuck and Douglas. They’re artsy, waterfront resort towns in West Michigan. Although Saugatuck-Douglas sits in what’s known to be the Bible belt of the state, it’s also house to a vacation destination to a large gay community. Michigan Radio’s Emily Fox reports on how Saugatuck-Douglas became the male lover resort of the Midwest.
Jonathan Schruer has lived in Saugatuck for 11 years. He lives downtown, which is lined with boutique and artsy mom and pop shops right on the fluid. Schruer and his partner hasten a Bed and Breakfast here.
In his spare time, Schreur has been working on a plan with the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Community to tell the story of how the gay community came to be. As it turns out, gay men and women have been coming to Saugatuck-Douglas for a long time.
