Description of City Houston’s queer community is located largely in the Montrose area. Here you’ll find many shopping, dining and cruising opportunities. The Galleria on the West Side, minutes from Montrose, is a great one-stop shopping destination, with 375 stores, restaurants, and entertainment.
The gay scene
Houston is a welcoming place where it’s virtually unfeasible to remain a stranger for long. The small-town feeling contrasts with this big city’s soaring skyline, world-class arts, and cuisine that’s as sophisticated and varied as you’ll discover anywhere. The bar scene is varied too, from clubs catering to cowboys, leather guys, bears, and Latinos, to upscale lounges in the style of New York or LA, plus retro-music and alternative/arts venues.
Getting around
A car is a must for getting around Houston’s sprawl. But if driving, observe the posted speed limits. Police here are vigilant. Metro has a fleet of buses and a rail network of three lines, red, green and purple, with 44 stations for getting around the city.

This annual 26.2, 13.1 and 3.1 mile run begins and ends at Downtown’s George R. Brown Convention Center, letting runners watch all the beauty the city has to offer. The race has steadily grown to lure more than 20,000 entrants from around the world and thousands upon thousands of spectators handing out cheers and sustenance for all the runners.
Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Grande Parade
January 15, 2024
This annual celebration celebrating the civil rights leader marches through the heart of Houston and draws more than 300,000 supporters from around the nation. The parade will take place in Midtown Houston, starting on San Jacinto Street & Elgin Street beginning 10 a.m. To register for the procession or for more information visit www.mlkgrandeparade.org or call 713-560-8328.

Mardi Gras! Galveston is the largest Mardi Gras celebration in Texas, attracting more than 300,000 attendees annually. The two-week celebration is leading known for its lavish parades held on the streets of the city's historic downtown and beachfront.
